Take a day trip from Daufuskie Island or Hilton Head to Beaufort, SC
My mom and I took off like Thelma and Louise for a long weekend away from Atlanta. We had an inexpensive hotel booked but that was our only plan. We traveled from Atlanta to Beaufort, South Carolina. We had heard that Beaufort is a mini Charleston and rich with history and art. If you want a luxurious or romantic getaway stay at the Rhett House Inn right down town or the Beaufort Inn. Take a horse drawn carriage through the Spanish moss draped live oak trees to learn about the history of Beaufort.
The shops and art galleries line Bay Street, the main street in Beaufort. They all have very cute names like Salt and Sweetgrass. Be sure to have breakfast at the Blackstone CafĂ© and even take your four legged friend if you don’t mind sitting on the patio. They are dog friendly. For dinner if you cross the bridge toward Fripp Island, you arrive on Lady’s Island and on the left hand side sits Docksides with some of the best fresh seafood in the low country. You sit over the bay and marsh with an amazing view and watch the sun go down while enjoying your Frogmore Stew a local low country favorite.
Take a tour from Beaufort out to St. Helena Island, just past Lady’s Island and you can learn about the Gullah Culture. On St. Helena sits a little hole in the wall called Gullah Grub and it is great for a quick lunch. Salt Gallery downtown carries many of the Gullah artists. They also have walking tours of the large antebellum houses downtown. The only house that is open as a museum is the Verdier House on Bay Street, all the other houses are privately owned. Beaufort does have a once a year home tour and many private owners open their homes for the public. They also have a shrimp festival in fall if you would like to enjoy some cooler weather. Beaufort has great art, great restaurants, beautiful coastal scenery, beaches and is rich in history. Enjoy a wonderful weekend getaway.
